What is the true meaning of Utility Computing?

Utility computing is often misquoted and misunderstood as “cloud computing”, “software as a service (SaaS)”, “Grid computing”, “organic IT”, “on-demand computing”and even application provisioning and are just a few of the terms used to describe the concept of utility computing. So when considering Utility Computing it is important to be clear about what is being provided.

Although this lack of clarity is a sign of the immaturity of the market, it also suggests the need for customers to be specific in contractual terms about what they are procuring and to make sure they have sufficient detail about the service levels in the contract.

One of the key promises of utility computing is the fast, automated re-use of computing resources, however security, as with any outsourcing deal, cannot be ignored.

Accesspoint will advise you about the security levels provided and include warranties and indemnities in your agreement for reassurance and ultimately your peace of mind.

Summary – simply put, utility computing is the bundling and delivery of computing resource as a metered service, similar to that of electricity, gas and water supply – in other words ‘pay as you go’. For the end user, simply put, computing resource can now be rented on a pay for what you use basis. The need for capital budget is greatly reduced and in certain circumstances eliminated.

Making IT happen is critical, making IT happen well is an art.
